A distinctive old elm tree stood on the curve of what used to be the old railway path that I frequently walked when I lived in Waldemar, Ontario. A lone sentinel, it stood tall over the fields of grain throughout the seasons, a welcoming beacon to those who knew about the ongoing hardships of the elm. I almost wept when I heard that it came down several years ago... I most likely will, if or when I walk that path again.
